Llawnroc

This new home sits on the cliffs above Porthcothan Bay, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in North Cornwall. Its sharp, clean lines create a striking contrast with the soft slopes of the surrounding landscape, while nodding to the rugged form of Will’s Rock out at sea.

Design Concept

The site itself shaped the design. Narrow and sloping, it stretches between two neighbouring houses before opening up towards the sea. To make the most of this, the plan divides the home into two clear zones: a linear block of bedrooms that catch the morning sun, and a triangular block for shared living spaces that opens wide to the sea, coastline, and sunset. Capping the main living space is a dark circular roof — a nod to both traditional slate roofs and the smooth beach pebbles found nearby.

Layout and Flow

Planning restrictions encouraged a more compact solution: the triangular living block is stacked over two levels, with dining below and living above. At the sharp apex, a staircase links the floors, creating a sense of drama as movement shifts from compressed mid-landing to expansive volumes of light and view. Though double the size than the house it replaced, the new building respects its neighbours by keeping a sympathetic scale, height, and material palette.

Approach

The entrance lies between the two blocks, drawing visitors in while offering a first glimpse of Will’s Rock, echoed again from within.

Views

Expansive glazing immerses the interior in its setting. Rather than simply framing the panorama, the glass immerses you in it. With shifting light, tides, and weather, the view is never the same twice — the house becomes a front-row seat to nature’s theatre.
