Oak Tree Farm Lair

This small pavilion in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Surrey reimagines the traditional garden folly with a contemporary twist. Set within stunning countryside, it offers a sheltered place to pause and enjoy the landscape while also serving a variety of practical roles: a family room, garden dining space, semi-open cinema, bathing pavilion, party venue, and a secluded home office on the upper level.

Reflections

One side of the building feels anchored to the ground, while the other appears to float above a pond. Its character is defined by its relationship to water, shifting subtly throughout the day as sunlight moves across the curved façade, and changing again with the seasons.

Discovery

The pavilion’s teardrop-shaped plan balances practicality with openness. The square part provides efficient space for everyday use, while the sweeping curves open to views and sunlight. An open stair leads to the rooftop deck, framed by layered planters. Each side of the building offers a distinct perspective, inviting visitors to walk around and experience it from every angle.

Details

The two storey ‘tower’ is clad in a unique intricately layered, yet cost-effective cladding finish that plays with light and shadow, contrasting with the smooth, curved form of the main pavilion. Stepped planters soften the geometry, while a lightweight canopy marks the entrance on the lower level.
